LANXESS launches Virkon™ for veterinary hospitals

  • New packaging, designed for environmental disinfection in veterinary hospitals
  • Broad spectrum efficacy and high safety
  • Clearer identification to prevent counterfeits

Shanghai – November 3, 2020 – Specialty chemicals company LANXESS has launched an environmental disinfectant for veterinary hospitals under its brand Virkon™.

Virkon™ disinfectants are scientifically formulated to offer excellent disinfection performance, making them desirable solutions to tackling major diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria and viruses in veterinary hospitals.

In veterinary hospitals, pets tend to suffer stress as they are with other animals in an unfamiliar environment. This increases the risk of infection. With Virkon™ broad-spectrum disinfectants, veterinary hospitals can properly clean and disinfect surfaces and equipment to block the path of disease transmission and protect the health of pets.

Broad spectrum efficacy and high safety

Veterinary hospitals, where a large number of sick animals are gathered every day, are exposed to high possibilities of diseases contraction. Diseases can be spread via a variety of cross-contamination vectors. Therefore, Virkon broad-spectrum disinfectant becomes an essential biosafety tool in veterinary hospitals. Its unique formula offers a broader spectrum and higher activity than some other disinfectants on the market. By generating broad-spectrum non-selective oxidation reactions, Virkon can inactivate and destroy target pathogens. Different from the chemical approaches used by some other disinfectants on the market, Virkon has no special toxicological effects on target organisms and is proven to kill pathogens within seconds.

Upon independent testing, Virkon has been proven to be effective against more than 100 strains of viruses from 22 families, 400 strains of bacteria, as well as 60 strains of fungi and yeasts. These strains, including canine parvovirus (CPV), feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and animal-derived MRSA, are the cause of diseases. LANXESS applied a variety of exposure times, temperatures and organic challenge levels to test Virkon, and all results show its high efficacy in preventing such diseases.

Committed to the development of chemical safety and management capabilities across the sector of animal health and hygiene, LANXESS has been making huge investments in enhancing the performance and safety of Virkon.  Evaluations indicate that Virkon is neither corrosive to the skin nor prone to cause allergies. After being diluted at 1:100 (1%) in regular use, it is non-irritating to the skin and eyes and is not deemed an allergen.

Clearer identification to prevent counterfeits

In 2018, LANXESS upgraded the external packaging and labels of the Virkon™ series for the first time, which perfectly combined the black corporate logo of LANXESS and the yellow brand logo. From June 2019, the "LANXESS" mark in English on the upper right of the label was replaced by the company name in both Chinese and English, making it easier for Chinese users to identify.

In the latest version of Virkon™ for veterinary hospitals, the product is packed in white cans with lake blue labels.

Consumers can also identify the authenticity of products by checking the product name, veterinary drug registration number, and QR code on the label.

In China, the product name of Virkon disinfectants on the label and packaging is "卫可" in simplified Chinese without any prefix (suffix) indicating the company name of “LANXESS”. It is a veterinary drug formally registered with the Ministry of Agriculture, with a registration number of (2016) WSYZZ No. 05, which is available for query at National Veterinary Drug Basic Information Database (

Each Virkon™ product is marked with a QR code on its package for whole-process traceability. Scan the code via WeChat or the National Veterinary Drug Comprehensive Inquiry APP to obtain the product’s generic name, manufacturer, registered number of approval, batch number, production date and other information.
