Effective biosecurity barrier controls essential for the prevention and control of African Swine Fever (ASF) and Avian Influenza (AI)

Shanghai – May 13, 2019 – with two of the most feared epidemic diseases, African Swine Fever (ASF) and Avian Influenza (AI) spreading rapidly across China and Southeast Asia, specialty chemicals company, LANXESS, have emphasized the key role biosecurity barrier controls must play in helping to control their spread. “Disease prevention and control must always be the prime focus,” said Stephan Cho, Head of Market Segment Disinfection in the Material Protection Products business unit (MPP), at LANXESS.  “Instead of waiting for a disease challenge to happen, producers must take steps to build robust protocols that prioritize hygiene.  Biosecurity barrier controls, utilizing proven effective biocides, are the greatest weapons swine and poultry producers have in helping to prevent the spread and introduction of ASF and AI.”

Cho’s comments come ahead of LANXESS’ attendance at the annual China International Animal Husbandry Expo (CAHE), WuHan International Expo Centre, the central meeting point for veterinarians, influencers, officials and livestock producers in China.

“Implementing strict biosecurity barrier controls is the only real way of stopping the spread of ASF and AI from one production facility to another,” said Cho. “Humans, vehicles, wild animals and birds are all proven vectors through which these diseases rapidly spread.  Therefore, producers need to achieve the highest possible levels of biosecurity, leveraged by good buy-in and compliance from management, their staff and their suppliers”.

As part of their commitment to providing advice and support, LANXESS will highlight the key elements of an effective 360o approach to biosecurity best practice for surfaces, equipment and farm site perimeters, on their booth at CAHE 2019.

Virkon S and Virkon LSP proven effective against ASF and AI

LANXESS offers producers the proven broad spectrum virucidal disinfectants Virkon S and Virkon LSP for ASF and AI biosecurity prevention and control measures. Both Virkon disinfectants have been independently tested for virucidal efficacy against ASF and AI and have been proven to be effective against the viruses in the presence of organic challenge and at low temperatures, reflecting their proven performance and suitability for real world “on-farm” conditions. In addition, LANXESS is offering swine and poultry producers timely advice on the clinical symptoms of ASF and AI, and guidance on implementing enhanced biosecurity protocols across the range of possible infection vectors, including transport vehicles, housing facilities, personnel, wild animals and birds.

Virkon – the science to kill pathogens

“Virkon biocidal solutions have been scientifically formulated to address the major disease concerns facing modern livestock production.  Their science-backed formulations offer livestock producers disinfectant products with performance characteristics that have defined biosecurity standards for over 30 years, making them the disinfectants of choice to help prevent and control the spread of epidemic diseases such as ASF and AI,” adds Cho.
