Extensive range of colorants, flame retardants and additives for plastic applications

Shanghai, April 18, 2012 – Specialty chemicals company LANXESS exhibited its range of organic dyes, plasticizer and flame retardants for plastic applications, including toys, food packaging, construction, electrical and automotive parts at the Chinaplas in Shanghai, China, from April 18 to 21, 2012.

Macrolex colorants meet numerous legal conditions for use in food packaging, toys, electrical and automotive parts. They make it possible to achieve excellent results in coloring amorphous polymers. Coloration can range from transparent to full coverage, depending on the polymer and combination of colorants. It is excellent non-toxic colorant for automotive parts such as taillights and signal lights due to its high color intensity, outstanding brilliance, very good weather resistance lightfastness, and heat stability.

As a global leader in the field of phthalate-free plasticizers, LANXESS offers the very broad product portfolio including Mesamoll, Adimoll, Ultramoll, Unimoll and Uniplex.  Mesamoll, for example, which many customers use as an alternative to phthalate-based plasticizers, has recorded above-average growth since 2005.  In chemical terms, the products from the Mesamoll range are alkanesulfonic acid esters that are particularly notable for their good resistance to saponification, outstanding solvating and migration properties and compatibility with a wide range of polymers such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), rubber and polyurethane. The approvals granted for food contact applications are another advantage. Mesamoll has been classified by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) as posing no risk to humans when used in food contact applications such as dry and water-based foodstuffs.   Due to its outstanding resistance to chemicals and weather, it is commonly found in polyurethane sealants, films and extruded car parts made from PVC and other polymers.

A wide collection of highly efficient flame retardants from its Bayfomox, Disflamoll and Levagard ranges are also highlighted at this trade show.  Their properties make them interesting additives and enable them to be used as VOC-free solvents, plasticizers and wetting agents and to lower viscosity.   With its Disflamoll range for example, LANXESS offers halogen-free plasticizing flame retardants with outstanding fire safety characteristics for use in transparent coatings and in a variety of polymers, such as phenolic resins, PVC, rigid and soft polyurethane foams, and thermoplastic polyurethanes. Disflamoll products are halogen-free, colorless and transparent. They are extremely flame-retardant, are used as plasticizers, solvents and solvent substitutes and reduce viscosity as well.

“Our functional chemicals are used in many ways.  With its company history, the FCC has since accompanied developments in various plastic applications and has extensive know-how,” said  Chok Hak Leong, Sales Director Asia of the Functional Chemicals business unit, “We contribute to green mobility in particular by developing and manufacturing non-toxic chemicals that serve a variety of purposes in numerous automobile parts. By this way, we make products safer and reduce carbon footprint.”

The Functional Chemicals business is part of LANXESS’ Performance Chemicals segment, which recorded sales of EUR 2.13 billion in fiscal 2011.
