LANXESS awarded Sustainability Best Practice Award and Sustainability Influence Award 2017, helping the Yangtze River economic belt with sustainable development

Shanghai, September 12, 2017 – "Heading towards 2040: Corporate Innovation and Urban Sustainability" Excellence Awards Ceremony & Shanghai Summit 2017 was held in Shanghai. The "Health, Safety, and Environment Workshop" submitted by the specialty chemicals company LANXESS was awarded the "Sustainability Best Practice Award 2017" and the "Sustainability Influence Award 2017".


As an international chemical company, LANXESS attaches great importance to the sustainability of health, safety and environment (HSE). Since 2014, the company has held joint HSE workshops with China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation (CPCIF) to share experience and best practices on health, safety and environmental protection (HSE) with upstream and downstream enterprises of the industry chain, as well as relevant governmental departments, thereby promoting the sustainable development of the chemical industry in China.


To promote the development of the Yangtze River economic belt, the long-term interests of the Chinese nation must be considered, and under the new normal, eco-friendly and green development has become the new approach to ecological promotion. Sustainable development of HSE will also become the choice of chemical companies.


In April 2017, LANXESS in response to the action plan put forward by Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government of “two reductions, six controls and three improvements” (“263” in short), invited guests to interpret the “263” action plan and share leading HSE concepts and practices of enterprises. Among them were CPCIF president Li Shousheng, officials in charge of HSE from Changzhou municipal government, including those from its Economic and Information Technology Commission, Administration of Work Safety and Environmental Protection Bureau, representatives of industrial parks along the Yangtze River in Jiangsu, such as Nanjing Chemical Industry Park, Zhenjiang New Material Industrial Park, Yangzhou Chemical Industry Park, and Changshu Advanced Material Industrial Park, as well as guests from major chemical manufacturers in Changzhou Binjiang Economic Development Zone. Dr. Hu Dongqi, Technical Innovation Director of LANXESS Greater China, shared with the guests the HSE system and experience of LANXESS’ Changzhou site.


The award-winning "Health, Safety and Environment Workshop" is not the only example, but a long-term project of LANXESS that is being fully integrated into all aspects of the company's operations. In addition to the use of renewable raw material resources and innovative production processes to minimize the impact on the environment, LANXESS also continue to improve HSE performance, and develop environmentally friendly products and solutions.


For example, LANXESS has been included for the seventh consecutive time in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index World, ranking among the top 10% of the global chemical industry. This year more than 3,400 companies worldwide were assessed, and LANXESS’s performance in environmental efficiency and human capital development stood out in particular.


Meanwhile, LANXESS is also one of the world's 193 companies included in the Carbon Disclosure Project’s (CDP) "Climate A List". Through the implementation of safe, sustainable production processes and advanced environmental protection measures to enhance product portfolio innovation and production process innovation, LANXESS enables sustainable development by virtue of its quality products, technologies and services.


LANXESS reduced the company's specific GHG emissions by about 17% between 2010 and 2015 and proposed new climate protection targets in early 2016, hoping to reduce by 2025 greenhouse gas emissions by 25% from 2015.


LANXESS' leather chemicals plant building in Changzhou has been built to high environmental standards. Its R&D building is equipped with solar and geothermal installations, low-emissivity glass and a rainwater recovery system to significantly reduce energy consumption. The building is awarded China Green Building Silver Award; LANXESS’ ARLANXEO adopts Keltan ACE technology for sustainable production of EPDM. Compared with traditional technologies, the Keltan ACE catalytic technology can reduce the energy consumption during production, and has high catalytic efficiency, without the need for catalyst extraction; employees at LANXESS’ new inorganic pigment plant in Ningbo and Krefeld production site joined hands to develop the new "Ningbo process", which uses groundbreaking red iron oxide pigment production technology to reduce energy consumption by 80%, meeting the highest international environmental standards.


The "Heading Towards 2040: Corporate Innovation and Urban Sustainability" Excellence Awards Ceremony & Shanghai Summit 2017 was held. It was guided by Shanghai Information Office, Shanghai Commission of Commerce and Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau, and organized by Jiefang Daily (Shanghai Observer), Shanghai Daily and Since 2015, the event has been held for three consecutive years and well-received, focusing on science and technology innovation, urban sustainable development and other hot issues. Many multinational, state-owned and private companies have participated in it, presenting a great number of cases in point where co-existence and common prosperity is achieved for the businesses and the city they are in.
