LANXESS celebrates on the finish line an epic bike journey from Newbury to Hong Kong

Hong Kong/Shanghai-November 15, 2011 - Jon Lee and Micheil Gordon, two Environmental Science graduates and keen cyclists, completed today their epic bike journey from Newbury, UK to Hong Kong. The grand journey, which lasted 10 months and covered 17,000 km, is in support of a good cause: to raise funds for WaterAid, whilst at the same time increasing awareness of an important environmental issue.

The epic charity journey has been made possible through the sponsorship of the specialty chemicals company LANXESS. “We are delighted to support Jon and Micheil on this epic journey. They were not only raising money, but raising consciousness of water conservation,” said Martin Kraemer, CEO of LANXESS Greater China.

The two young men have raised a total amount of some £18,520 (CNY 185,200)along their exciting trek which crossed 16 countries in Europe and Asia.

Showing warm welcome, cyclists from Hong Kong Cycle Alliance joined Jon and Micheil to ride the last section from Tsim Sha Tsui Ferry Terminal to Hong Kong Cricket Club, where the finish line was set.

“As well as being a fantastic triumph of human endeavour, Micheil and Jon's trip reminds us of the remarkable capabilities of the bicycle and how far two wheels can take us,” said Martin Turner Chairman of Hong Kong Cycling Alliance.

At the finish line of Hong Kong Cricket Club, Micheil and Jon received a warm welcome from a cheerful crowd composed of cyclist fans, LANXESS employees and media. Martin Kraemer, CEO of LANXESS Greater China, handed in the wreaths and extended his warm congratulations. “It is a true epic journey,” said Kraemer. “We are delighted to have the opportunity to support such an exciting and worthy activity in line with our mission of saving environmental resources and ensuring a better quality of life. Already today, providing drinkable water is still a major challenge in many countries.”

LANXESS makes innovative products that help solve the problem, getting rid of substances that are polluting the water and thus make it pure and drinkable. “We use our expertise to help safeguard the supply of drinkable water and sustainably improve the quality of people’s lives,” added Kraemer. The specialty chemicals company has donated £10,000 to WaterAid apart from its financial support to the journey of the two young men.

During the trip, Micheil and Jon also visited LANXESS sites in Europe and Hong Kong. A lot of people have followed their trip by visiting their website -http://hongkongcycle.co.uk/ which has attracted about 70,000 hits in the past ten months following their journey through France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan to Hong Kong.

“Having studied Environmental Sciences, I am very interested in sustainable development, and am of the firm belief that a clean, accessible and secure water supply must first be achieved before any community can begin to work towards this,” said Jon.

For both of them, the trip has been a truly amazing one. “Bicycle touring is the best way of exploring a country – you are always put into intimate contact with both the local environment and people,” Micheil added.
