LANXESS Co-hosts the Hackathon 2019-The Second Young Talents’ Chemical Innovation Challenge

Shanghai – June 5, 2019 –The final of the second Young Talents’ Chemical Innovation Challenge (Hackathon 2019) took place on May 31st and June 1st in Shanghai. The event was organized by the Multinationals Committee of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation (MNC, CPCIF) and co-hosted by fifteen multinationals including German specialty chemicals company LANXESS.

The project “Natural Straw with Garlic Peel as Raw Material” of “Please, take” team from China Pharmaceutical University has received high praises from all judges and won the 1st prize. CPCIF Chairman Li Shousheng awarded the prize to them.

This is the second time that LANXESS has co-hosted the Hackathon. Three LANXESS executives, namely Hak Leong Chok, Executive Vice President APAC at the Additives business unit; Chen Lie, Director of Digital Transformation APAC, and Wells Chou, Head of Human Resources APAC, took roles as specialized instructor, cross-discipline instructor and judge. They carefully guided the competing teams and gave professional advice on the recycling system for new plastics.

As part of CPCIF “2019 Together for Sustainable Community” (TFSC) series and the only Hackathon of Chinese chemical industry, the second Young Talents’ Chemical Innovation Challenge strengthened “the connection of social focused events and providing professional solutions” based on the successful experience of the first Challenge last year. The topic of this year is “New Plastic Economy”, which encouraged students to explore innovative solutions to product innovation, process innovation and paradigm innovation to address current social concerns about plastic pollution and ocean plastic wastes by exploring new methods and ideas.

Entries of more than 40 teams from 22 universities were received within only two weeks since the topic release. After two rounds of selection, 15 teams from China Pharmaceutical University, Harbin Industrial University (Weihai), Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Tianjin University, Ningbo Institute of Materials, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (Chinese Academy of Sciences), Dalian University of Technology, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Donghua University, Beijing Institute of Technology, Shenyang University of Chemical Technology and Changzhou University were qualified to the final stage.

Supporting educational programs is one of the examples of LANXESS's commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainable development. From 2008 to 2018, LANXESS has launched more than 500 educational programs around the world, reaching more than 700,000 people. In order to encourage college students to actively participate in efforts towards sustainable development of water resources and give full play to their knowledge and creativity, LANXESS has hosted the “Clean Water for Better Life” University Students Research Competition since 2015. Over these five years, the competition has been actively participated by 729 students of 32 university from 13 provinces (municipalities and autonomous regions). 

As reported, the team “Foaming cube” from Ningbo Institute of Materials and the team “Plastic Bigbang” from Dalian University of Technology won the 2nd prizes respectively with their projects “Flame-retardant Modification of Polypropylene Foam” and “Intelligent Recycling Bin in Plastic Terminal”. Three teams: Shuimu Plastic Innovation, Infinite Magic of Membrane, and Chemical Fiber Engineering Research team from Tsinghua University, Shenyang University of Chemical Technology and Donghua University won the 3rd prizes with projects “New Thermosetting Material”, “Product Innovation – New Functional Plastic Material” and “Process Innovation – Polyamide 6-based Polymers”.
