LANXESS Steps up commitment to sustainable growth in China

German specialty chemicals company LANXESS is celebrating the year of 2011 as its “Year of High-tech Plastics.”  This special material essentially makes possible many of the comforts of modern life.   High-tech plastics from LANXESS are used in areas that include the automobile industry and the electrical and electronics sector, as well as in household appliances and sporting equipment. They also contribute to a wide range of sustainable and environmentally friendly technologies.

"LANXESS’ high-tech plastics not only support the trend towards greater mobility but also make cars safer and reduce fuel consumption due to their outstanding properties," said Martin Kraemer, CEO of LANXESS Greater China, speaking to Chinese and other Asian journalists at a press conference in Guangzhou on May 17, 2011 in conjunction with Chinaplas 2011 – the most reputable trade fair for plastics and rubbers in Asia.

Germany’s leading specialty chemicals company offers an extensive range of environmentally friendly products and solutions. For example, the plastic-metal composite technology invented by LANXESS Semi-Crystalline Products business has become firmly established in the automotive industry for the manufacture of lightweight, high-strength structural parts such as front ends, pedal support brackets and brake pedals.  Compared with its aluminum equivalent, it weighs 20 percent less.   High-performance Bayferrox®,and Colortherm® pigment ranges by the Inorganic Pigments business unit provide extraordinarily lightfast and weather-stable products with outstanding quality as well as easy and environmentally compatible processing.   And the Functional Chemicals business unit offers a range of products enabling interested users of phthalate-based additives to switch to alternative safer products.

In China, the new five year plan calls for reducing pollution and increasing energy efficiency.   “Today’s Chinese consumers are much more conscious of the impact their choices have on the environment,” said Kraemer. “For automobile, safety and comfort still remain the main drivers for selecting car, but consumer also considers the ecological effects of car.”

According to industry experts, global demand for high-tech plastics is predicted to grow by some 7 percent annually through 2020 while the Chinese automotive industry is expected to rise by 9 percent in 2011. It is driven mainly by increasing vehicle production and the trend toward lighter-weight automotive components.

“Demand for LANXESS’ high-tech plastics compounds recorded double-digit growth in China in the first quarter,” said Michael Zobel, global head of business unit semi-crystalline products at LANXESS.

LANXESS has made a series of investments in its global high-tech plastics network just recently. In January, 2011, LANXESS broke ground on a new facility in Jhagadia, India. With an initial capacity of 20,000 metric tons per year, the new compounding facility will start producing the high-tech plastics Durethan and Pocan at the beginning of 2012.  The company is also investing Euro 10 million to increase the annual capacity of its facility in Wuxi, China, to approximately 60,000 metric tons per year by mid-2011.

LANXESS is deeply committed to ensuring the sustainable growth of China by bringing innovative products and services to customers, minimizing the environmental impact of operations and fostering the well-being of employees and communities.  The company is convinced that all are truly in tune with the new five-year plan and its goal of “wealthy people, strong state.”

LANXESS is a leading specialty chemicals company with sales of EUR 7.1 billion in 2010 and currently around 15,500 employees in 30 countries. The company is at present represented at 46 production sites worldwide. The core business of LANXESS is the development, manufacturing and marketing of plastics, rubber, intermediates and specialty chemicals.
