LANXESS strengthens joint research capability with Qingdao University of Science and Technology

Shanghai/Qingdao, August 15, 2012 – German specialty chemicals company LANXESS further strengthens joint research and development with the Qingdao University of Science and Technology (QUST) by sponsoring a new internal mixer/extruder for the university.

 

In December 2011, a cooperation partnership between the QUST and the LANXESS business unit butyl rubber was started. This new activity focuses on a number of projects to further improve local rubber compounding and rubber formulation knowledge. The joint projects put special emphasis on the micro structure of the compounds and the polymer-filler interactions to further improve overall product performance.

 

“We are pleased to further strengthen our bonds with QUST. We have cooperated in numerous projects in the recent years and us providing this new piece of equipment to the university further underlines the relevance of our relationship and LANXESS’ commitment to the Chinese Rubber industry,” said Dr. Werner Breuers, Member of the Board of Management of LANXESS AG, who presented the new mixer/extruder to QUST on behalf of LANXESS at a ceremony on August 15.

 

“With the advanced facility, we could further work together to strengthen the capabilities of developing new products and applications as well as enhancing existing products,” said Dr. Breuers.

 

The sponsored internal mixer/extruder could be used to simulate and optimize process parameters with regards to viscosity, dispersion or plasiticizing behaviors of compounds.

 

Typical functions of the new equipment include characterizing the influences of different ingredients such as polymers, fillers, plasticizers, accelerators or curatives in rubber mixtures. It can also be used to analyze the processability and vulcanizing behavior of compounds. The extruding function could produce extrudate that then can be used as a test specimen or further analyzed for defects and inhomogeneities.

 

Mixing and extruding are key processes in producing rubbers. The internal mixer/extruder could further support the development of high quality products.

 

LANXESS has a long term partnership with the QUST, which is known for its strong rubber R&D capabilities. Early in 2008, LANXESS established its Rubber Research Center in Qingdao in close cooperation with QUST. The USD 16 million research center covers an area of 3,000 sqm in total and provides complete functions including fundamental research facilities, rubber mixing/testing laboratory and a 400 sqm pilot plant.
