LANXESS to showcase new BioAdimide™ product line at the Chinaplas

Shanghai, April 18, 2012 – LANXESS’ subsidiary Rhein Chemie is presenting its expertise of its new line of plastic additives at Chinaplas in Shanghai, China, from April 18 - 21, 2012.  This innovative product line has been specifically formulated for bioplastics and is poised to widen the applications of poly lactic acid (PLA) plastic. It enables the production of renewable, bio-based polymers for durable applications with a lower environmental impact.  BioAdimide™ additives are specially suited to improve the hydrolysis resistance of bio-based polyester, specifically polylactide (PLA), and to expand its range of applications.


Rhein Chemie was honored with the global new product innovation award 2011  in the bioplastic additives market for its new product BioAdimide™ by Frost & Sullivan.  This award is presented to the company that has excelled in the following areas: innovative element of the product; leveraging leading edge technologies in product; value-added features/benefits; increased customer ROI and for customer acquisition/penetration potential.


Innovative element of the product
The incorporation of this additive in the PLA formulation enables the adjustment of a range of process variables. This, in turn, opens up a wide window of possibilities in the processing technology of PLA, thereby expanding its application portfolio. The improvement in the melt stability of the PLA enables its processing into materials like fibers and foams. Currently, the poor melt flow characteristics of PLA limits its opportunity to be used as a fiber.


Leverage Leading Edge Technologies in Product
The company’s strong expertise in the field of technology has enabled it to develop a range of BioAdimide™ products suitable for different applications. BioAdimide™ 100 imparts hydrolytic stability by providing endcapping to the carboxylic acid groups of the polymer backbone. BioAdimide™ 500 XT improves the melt stability by acting as a chain extender. Upon addition of these products in an optimum ratio, the final polymer is expected to exhibit superior processing characteristics and processability.


Value Added Features/Benefits
The BioAdimide™ product, apart from enhancing certain performance characteristics of the PLA polymer also offers few other advantages. Through incorporation of BioAdimide™ in the formulation, the amount of regrind material added to the virgin resin can be increased to as much as 40.0 percent. This is significantly higher than what is usually added. Another significant advantage of using BioAdimide™ is that it enables the blending of PLA with high temperature plastics.


Increased Customer ROI
Apart from improving the processability, BioAdimide™ also enables processing of the bioplastics efficiently at lower temperatures, thereby reducing the need for high temperature processing. Although the product is offered at a premium price, there is a growing interest among the customers as it renders superior performance benefits to the bioplastic. Thus, the product has garnered wider interest due to the high value proposition it offers to the customers.


Customer Acquisition/Penetration Potential
Rhein Chemie is targeting the whole value chain of bioplastic producers, including resin manufacturers, compounders and plastic processors/converters for its BioAdimide™ product. This offers an opportunity of a large customer base for the company in this product offering. Moreover, with the wide range of target applications for the product including automotive, consumer electronics and construction, there exists a large penetration potential available for the company to be tapped. The company has already been witnessing significant interests from customers across applications and markets.

About BioAdimide
BioAdimide™ additives are specially suited to improve the hydrolysis resistance of bio-based polyester, specifically polylactide (PLA), and to expand its range of applications.  Currently, there are two BioAdimide™ grades available.  The BioAdimide™ 100 grade improves the hydrolytic stability up to seven times that of an unstabilized grade, thereby helping to increase the service life of the polymer.
