Lightweight construction solutions for green mobility


Shanghai, April 18, 2012 – Intelligent lightweight construction solutions based on polyamides and polyesters will be one of the main areas of focus for LANXESS’ Semi-Crystalline Products business unit (SCP) at this year’s Chinaplas from April 18 to 21 in Shanghai, China. LANXESS sees enormous potential for polyamide composite sheet hybrid technology in concepts for Green Mobility, such as electric vehicles. Possible applications include engine bearings, door structures, pedals, front ends, and seat cross-members.

Among the things LANXESS is presenting at the trade show are innovative applications for the automotive industry made using polyamide composite sheet hybrid technology.  It makes cars lighter, yet still offers sufficiently high strength. 

 

“We want to demonstrate the enormous range of opportunities offered by polyamide composite sheet hybrid technology for saving weight in automotive design. This composite structure is in many cases an ideal alternative not only to metals but also to carbon fiber-reinforced thermosetting systems, both from an economic and from a performance point of view,” explained Dr. Christof Krogmann, Vice President Asia-Pacific, Semi-Crystalline Products business unit.

 

HiAnt – Driving innovation with customers
In a sophisticated development process, LANXESS has itself come up with a system for simulating all the process steps in polyamide composite sheet hybrid technology and the new material model. This expertise is part of HiAnt – a brand in which the SCP business unit has pooled all of its engineering know-how to support its partners in the development of innovative parts. These services range from material selection and CAE calculations to mold construction, part testing and support with the start of series production.

 

Polyamide technology – Making engines more fuel-efficient
There is a trend towards turbocharged engines that are smaller and weigh less, yet deliver more power. Turbocharged engines run at higher temperatures, therefore they require plastics that are more heat-resistant. LANXESS’ pseudoplastic polyamide grades for blow-molded parts in engine air-management systems that can withstand high pressures and temperatures. Particularly, the blow-moldable Durethan AKV 325 with special heat stabilization is used in the production of charge-air tubes. This is one way LANXESS’ polyamide technology leads to smaller and stronger engines.

 

Asia-Pacific Application Development Center in HK

LANXESS will open a new Asia-Pacific Application Development Center in the Hong Kong Science & Technology Park in the second half of 2012. 

 

It will make Hong Kong a technology hub for Durethan and Pocan high-performance plastics by offering a comprehensive, high-value technology package including CAD and CAE facilities and a world-class parts testing center to all customers in the Asia-Pacific region. 

 

“This new Asia-Pacific Application Development Center will significantly enhance our ability to meet the growing needs for green mobility and to help spur the growth of automotive industry in this region,” remarked Krogmann.

 

The SCP business unit is part of LANXESS’ Performance Polymers segment, which achieved total sales of EUR 5,059 million in fiscal 2011.
