QUALITY PURIFIES: LANXESS presenting strong technologies for clean water

May 4, 2017, Shanghai – Specialty chemicals company LANXESS, one of the world’s foremost suppliers of water treatment solutions, is exhibiting at IE EXPO in Shanghai, the largest and most important environmental trade show in Asia from May 4 to 6.

Water is the source of all life, according to figures from the World Health Organization (WHO) and Unicef, some 1.8 billion people resort to polluted water to satisfy their thirst. Every year, nearly 850,000 people die as a result of polluted drinking water or poor hygiene conditions. Population growth, environmental pollution and climate change could greatly exacerbate this situation in the decades ahead.

It is therefore for us to manage it responsibly, and that means in industrial production too. Nearly one-quarter of global water consumption is attributed to industrial production. The global volume of wastewater is accordingly high. When it comes to wastewater – the subject of this year's United Nations World Water Day on March 22 – the goal therefore is: to avoid and recycle instead of conventional disposal.

This year, “environment protection” ranks 6th in the 10 hottest topics at China’s 2017 Two Sessions. Among them, the protection of water resources attracted much attention due to the high relevance with people's daily lives.

As a responsible corporate citizen, LANXESS has focused on water treatment industry for almost 80 years. It has been actively committed to effectively helping enhance the supply of clean water, improve water quality, and reduce the cost of drinking water. Meanwhile, LANXESS is leading the way in this field starting with its own production facilities. For example, the volume of process wastewater produced relative to product output has fallen by six percent Group-wide in the last five years.

Quality purifies

LANXESS offers three distinct water treatment technologies with high quality, including the production of drinking water and the treatment and recycling of process and wastewater in industry or for water softening in the home. The portfolio includes Lewabrane® reverse osmosis membrane elements, Lewatit® ion exchange resins and Bayoxide®iron oxide adsorbers for water treatment. The high-performance products are used in numerous industries, such as energy generation, food, chemicals and petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, electronics, metalworking and mining.

Ion exchange resins: tiny beads with a big impact

An efficient technology from LANXESS for treating water is the use of Lewatit ion exchange and specialty adsorber resins. Among other applications, ion exchange resins are used to remove pollutants, such as nickel, nitrate, perchlorate, borate and hydrocarbons, from drinking water. During the ion exchange process, contaminated water flows through a container filled with ion exchange resin. It filters the contaminants, binding the ions of the pollutants and replacing them with harmless ions. A variety of resins are used, depending on the pollutant. In the treatment of wastewater, the ion exchange resins remove heavy metals, such as mercury or cadmium. In addition, precious metals, such as copper or platinum, can be filtered out and then used for other purposes. Industrial applications include the treatment of water for industrial processes in power plants. These costly facilities need large volumes of cooling and process water, which have to be demineralized to protect the systems against limescale, for example.

Lewabrane® RO membranes: Modern membrane filtration technology

The membrane elements in LANXESS’s Lewabrane line of products are spirally wound, thin-film, composite membranes. They filter out undesirable substances from water, such as salts, pesticides, herbicides, viruses, bacteria and particulates. The product line includes elements for all the main reverse osmosis applications, including desalinating seawater, brackish water and low-salinity water. Leading fields of application include the production and treatment of drinking water, but also the treatment of process water, other industrial water, and wastewater.

Bayoxide® iron oxide adsorber – an arsenic removal specialist

Elevated concentrations of arsenic in drinking water put millions of people on all five continents at risk. The acceptable upper limit of arsenic set by the World Health Organization (WHO) is 10 micrograms per liter. Bayoxide E 33 is a key product from the Bayoxide E range for removing arsenic from water. This technical iron oxide hydroxide with the chemical formula FeO(OH) is ideal for eliminating arsenic and other ions from both drinking water and wastewater. Bayoxide E 33 granules are used in a continuous solid-bed process that routes the water through one or more filled containers and binds the arsenic quickly and selectively. The product has a far better arsenic adsorption capacity than conventional adsorption media, which gives the filter a long service life.

Clean water for better life

LANXESS carried out the University Students Research Competition under the theme of “Clean Water for Better Life” collaborated with WTO Tribune in two consecutive years since 2015. By funding 25 water research program in 14 universities, LANXESS contributed to raise students’ and public awareness of water challenges, gather information and propose constructive solutions to tackle water challenges so as to improve people’s quality of life. The 3rd LANXESS College Students’ Water Resources Protection and Utilization Competition will be initiated on June, 2017.

As Asia's leading environmental show, IE expo China 2017 will cover all the high potential markets in environmental area such as water and sewage treatment, water supply and drainage, solid waste disposal, waste management, air pollution control and air purification, site remediation, environmental monitoring
