LANXESS at the 6th Leman China Swine Conference 2017, November 2-4, Nanjing International Exhibition Center, stand A33

Say No to overuse of Antibiotics! LANXESS Virkon S series Disinfectants Provides Green Protection for Food safety

November 2, 2017, Shanghai – The sixth Leman China Swine Conference & 2017 Expo was held in Nanjing International Exhibition Center, the German specialty chemicals company LANXESS brings its disinfectant product Virkon S to the exhibition.

On September 2, 2016, the specialty chemicals company LANXESS completed acquisition of the Clean and Disinfect business of U.S.-based chemical manufacturer Chemours. The business comprises three product lines: disinfectants, potassium monopersulfate and chlorine dioxide. The disinfectants product line is mainly used in the field of biological safety in the veterinary industry. Its core product, Virkon S, has proved to be successful against a multitude of viruses, bacteria and fungi and can protect animal health and biological safety.

China has the world's largest swine breeding industry and also is a major pork consumer. China's pork production accounts for more than half of the world's total  In China, the development of the swine industry directly affects the improvement of national economy and the people's living standard.

Meanwhile, China's swine industry has been severely damaged by over-using antibiotic. It's reported that in 2013, half of the world's antibiotics were used in China, half of which were used in livestock farming.

Many swine farmers in China have poor risk awareness and don't attach importance to the feeding and healthy management before illness happened inside farms. The high-dose and blind use of drugs for sick swine  is very common. In some pig farms, low-dosage antibiotics and drug additives are used for a long time to prevent diseases, reducing the disease resistance of swine and causing bacterial drug resistance. In addition, these antibiotics will enter wells and rivers through the urine and feces of live pigs, or are used as fertilizer for vegetables, causing severe antibiotic pollution. The antibiotic residues in pork also pose hidden food safety risks. The spread of antibiotics can cause serious drug resistance. Drug-resistant genes will spread among bacteria; some bacteria that have already been overcome by antibiotics will no longer be treated by antibiotics, making some simple infection incurable.

As food safety was increasingly stressed by Chinese government and the latest revised Food Safety Act was issued in October 2015, the Ministry of Agriculture recently adopted a series of measures to limit the abuse of rearing antibiotics. In the future, all intensive pig farms should take comprehensive biosecurity measures, such as disinfection to improve the breeding environment. The green feeding mode of suppling reasonable nutrition will be an effective way to reduce the abuse of antibiotics, improve animal health and relieving food safety risks in the production of swine.

Virkon S, one of the world's leading branding of veterinary disinfectants, performed excellently in combating the avian influenza A(H5N8) that broke out in many Eurasian countries in 2016. Virkon S can be used for continuous biological prevention at the recommended dilution ratio of 1:100. Being quick-acting and effective, Virkon S has also been used to prevent the FMD and other major diseases.

A study conducted by an international independent testing laboratory has proven that Virkon S continues to maintain high effectiveness under challenging farm environments without increasing the concentration or prolonging the surface contact time. These environments include winter of severe cold, various organic influences, dilution of rain water, the presence of various pathogenic microorganisms in farms, and changeable acidity and alkalinity.

Jordan Li, Sales Manager of LANXESS Material Protection business unit, Greater China and Northeast Asia, said "Disease and epidemic prevention has long been a top priority of the ANIMAL HUSBANDRY industry. Effective and multi-functional disinfectants have always been much welcomed by the CHINESE market.  Virkon S series disinfectants from our business unit can provide effective, quick- acting, convenient, flexible and advanced disinfectant solutions package for different livestock producers, veterinary hospitals and farmers."

During the exhibition, Virkon S has also showcased its new visual label design. The new LANXESS trademark demonstrates the company's strong support for the Virkon S brand and its persistent pursuit of Energizing Chemistry.

The Allen D.Leman Swine Conference is the world's largest and most influential event for the swine industry. Founded in 1985, the 32-year-old conference entered China in 2012.
