World Day for Safety and Health at Work: LANXESS Supports Sustainable Transformation of Chemical Industry

April 28, 2017, Shanghai – To respond to the call of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work on April 28, and to promote sustainable development of chemical industry, China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation (hereinafter referred to as CPCIF), Changzhou National Hi-Tech District (hereinafter referred to as “CND”), and specialty chemicals company LANXESS jointly organized a symposium themed  “Exploring Chemical Industry’s Ecological Transformation Along the Yangtze River” at LANXESS’ Changzhou production site in the morning of April 28, 2017.

Chairman of CPCIF Li Shousheng made the opening speech titled “Creating a New Situation of Green Development in the Petroleum and Chemical Industry”. He noted, “Since the beginning of the reform and opening, China’s petroleum and chemical industry has made remarkable achievements, with its economic aggregate ranking No.2 in the world, while that of the chemical industry ranking No.1 globally. We boast one of the petroleum and chemical industrial powers in the world. However, the industrial development pattern still remains extensive, and there is a big gap in quality development. Overall, the industry is large in scale but not strong enough, and we are faced with severe challenges in energy consumption, pollution emission and production safety. When driving the ’Six Green Development Action Plans’, we need to focus on the problems, and, with the support of technologies, to facilitate the industry to create a new path of ‘green development’ driven by innovation.”

As an international chemicals company, LANXESS attaches great importance to sustainability in health, safety and environmental protection, and has initiated the “Health, safety and environmental protection” symposium jointly with CPCIF since 2014. Ming Cheng Chien, CEO of LANXESS Greater China, welcomed the guests at the meeting. “Sustainability is key to support the transformation and upgrade of China’s chemical industry. The year of 2017 features the deepening of supply-side structural reform in China, and we are very much honored to work with our partners to build an exchange platform for the industry, share the successful experiences on safe, sustainable and effective solutions and production processes, and jointly provide our views and suggestions for creating a path of sustainable transformation.”

Support the “263” action plan in Jiangsu province

“The development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt must take into account the long-term interest of the Chinese nation and follow a green development path that gives priority to the ecological environment.” This has become the new guideline in ecological civilization construction under the new normal. The safe, environmentally friendly, healthy and sustainable development path will also become the only choice for chemical enterprises. In December 2016, Jiangsu provincial party committee and Jiangsu people’s government initiated the “2 Reduction 6 Treatment 3 Upgrade” (“263”) action plan, which, implemented in the chemical industry, means to encourage enterprise transformation, properly apply environmental economic policies, and drive green development.

In order to explore more in-depth the priorities of industrial transformation and upgrade, relevant guests were invited including officials of  the Commission of Economy and Information, the Administration of Work Safety and the Environmental Protection Bureau of Changzhou municipal government; representatives from industrial parks along the Yangtze River in Jiangsu such as Nanjing Chemical  Industrial Park , Zhenjiang New Material Industrial Park, Yangzhou Chemical Industrial Park and Changshu New Material Industrial Park; leaders from major chemical manufacturing enterprises in Changzhou Binjiang Economic Development Zone to interpret Jiangsu province’s “263” action plan, and to share the enterprises’ leading concepts and practices in the health, safety and environmental protection. Dr. Hu Dongqi, Technological Innovation Director of LANXESS Greater China, shared the system and experience of LANXESS Changzhou plant regarding health, safety and environmental protection.

On the same day, LANXESS organized training, communication and commitment activities relating to health, safety and environmental protection at its office and production sites across the globe to mark the “World Day for Safety and Health at Work”, advocating LANXESS’ four principles about healthy and safe environment, that is, “Prevention, Personal Commitment, Proactive initiative and Performance”.

Focus on more effective and environmentally friendly innovation of manufacturing processes

LANXESS has been listed in Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for six consecutive years, and is one of just 193 companies around the world in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) “Climate A” List. By implementing safe and sustainable production processes and advanced environmental protection measures, and driving product portfolio innovation and production process innovation, LANXESS is able to achieve sustainable development with its high quality products, technologies and services.

From 2010 to 2015, specific greenhouse gas emissions of LANXESS have been reduced by 17%. LANXESS set a new climate protection goal in early 2016, aiming  its greenhouse gas emission to be further reduced 25% by 2025 compared that of 2015.

For example, LANXESS’ leather chemicals plant located in Changzhou adopts sophisticated technologies and environmental friendly processes, and provides innovative solutions. Its full-range, high quality leather chemicals optimize the performance of leather materials, such as softness and water resistance, and can also cover minor defect and remove dirt. In addition, the factory was built following high environmental protection standards. Its R&D building is equipped with solar and geothermal installations, low-emissivity glass and rainwater recycling devices to significantly reduce energy consumption. The entire building has won a national green construction silver prize.

It is worth mentioning that next to the leather chemicals plant, the ethylene-propylene-diene-monomer (EPDM) plant of ARLANXEO, a joint venture of LANXESS and Saudi Aramco. A total of Euro 235 million investment on this plant made it the largest investment project of LANXESS  China so far. The plant achieved sustainable production by adopting Keltan ACE technology, it reduced energy consumption in production and improved catalyst efficiency compared with traditional way, which do not need catalyst for extraction.

Actively lead the Responsible Care

In the afternoon, Changzhou Binjiang Economic Development Zone and the Association of International Chemicals Manufacturers (AICM) held the launch ceremony for the “Changzhou Binjiang Economic Development Zone Responsible Care Branch” at LANXESS’ Changzhou production site. In addition to the chairman company LANXESS (Changzhou) Co., Ltd., representatives from multiple local chemical companies attended the ceremony.
