Tough material for soccer shoes

For the soccer players' second most important tool after the ball – their boots – LANXESS leather chemicals play a major role, even if they are not directly visible. Many soccer shoes from well-known manufacturers are made from high-quality leather uppers, which are "finished" with special coatings after tanning. This production step – known in the trade as "finishing" or "dressing" – not only produces shine, color and a pleasant touch.

In the case of soccer shoes, it has another very important effect: Despite constant contact with the ball, grass, bare earth and water, the leather is virtually indestructible. Applied in thin layers only fractions of a millimeter thick, the synthetic polyacrylate and polyurethane polymers from LANXESS (Aquaderm®, Bayderm®, Euderm®, etc.) make the leather as tough as elephant skin. LANXESS products have been used at the World Cup not only to build the stadium. In fact, LANXESS is able to supply all the products needed in leather manufacturing – including inorganic and synthetic tanning materials, preservatives and fatliquoring agents, dyestuffs and pigments, as well as tanning and finishing auxiliaries.

The sole – vital part of soccer shoes and sports shoes

LANXESS’ synthetic rubbers sold under the brands BUNA CB Nd 40® and BUNA SE 1502® are largely employed in the manufacture of shoe soles, including sports shoes and soccer shoes, as well as sandals. In the World Cup, shoes made with LANXESS rubber, whose soles provide greater safety and performance, will help players put on this great show, run-through with emotion.

Tepex sole - another goal!

When the world's soccer elite makes its way to Brazil for the world's mostimportant soccer tournament, there will be millions of fans sharing the excitement once again in front of their televisions. They all hope for one result: that their team can score as many goals as possible. There are lots of factors in play whenever Messi, Ribéry & Co. successfully put the ball in the goal: the teammate's pass or the opponent's false steps, the defenders' and the goalie's reaction and, last but not least, the necessary smidgen of luck.

But the right shoes can also make the difference between victory and defeat. After all, to score a goal, even world-class soccer stars need solid footing. Without it, there is no way to get the spherical into the rectangle. That is why experts from all over the world are tinkering to come up with solutions to make soccer shoes even more stable, more robust and the same time - more lightweight. Several renowned shoemakers, such as Nike, produce their shoe soles using the high-performance fiber-reinforced composite Tepex® produced by the LANXESS subsidiary Bond-Laminates in Brilon (Germany). Thanks to the endless fibers used, the material is particularly firm and rigid, yet at the same time extremely lightweight. Many successful players appreciate this and will take to the field wearing shoes made with  Tepex® soles.
