Innovations in High-tech Plastics Energized by LANXESS

German specialty chemicals company LANXESS AG will once again be displaying its innovative solutions at Chinaplas 2011 from May 17 to 20 at the China Import & Export Fair Pazhou Complex, Guangzhou, China.  The three business units showcasing their innovations at Chinaplas 2011 are Semi-Crystalline Products (SCP), Inorganic Pigments (IPG) and Functional Chemicals (FCC).

Exhibits relating to Durethan polyamides and Pocan polybutylene terephthalates provided by the SCP business unit will concentrate on applications in the automotive, environmental, electrical/electronics, construction and consumer sectors.  The exhibits include numerous components consisting of the exceptionally stiff polyamide 6 Durethan DP BKV 60 H2.0 EF filled with 60 percent glass fibers, perfect for applications such as a printing press pan, intake manifold and circuit breaker.  A highlight that offers a replacement for sheet steel is the polyamide 6 spare wheel recess with integrated reinforcing channels in the Audi A8. The front end of the Audi A8 reveals the opportunities opened up by the use of organic sheets instead of metal in plastic-metal composite technology (hybrid technology) with Durethan. These nylon composite sheets are used to create a thin U-section in the lower beam of the hybrid front end. It results in a weight reduction of 20 percent compared with the equivalent aluminum insert. An innovative material for the electrical/electronics industry is Durethan DP AKV 30 FN00. This flame-retardant polyamide 66 does not contain any halogens or red phosphorus and is ideal for products such as insulation material.

The IPG business unit will highlight its reliable range of inorganic pigments for plastics coloring, including high-performance Iron Oxide and Chrome Oxide Green products of the industry leading Bayferrox and Colortherm pigment ranges. These Inorganic Pigment product lines of LANXESS are characterized by their ease of dispersion, high thermal stability, excellent weather stability and superior lightfastness - the optimal choice for environmentally friendly plastics coloring.  Highlights are the unique reds of IPG’s Bayferrox and Colortherm 100 color line, covering a very broad range of hues, extending from a yellowish cast to a distinctly bluish shade. The Bayferrox and Colortherm Red 100 range offers also a high color stability during the dispersion and extrusion process of the pigments, a property that is unique to the industry.

Alongside the red shades LANXESS is also showcasing high-performance iron oxide yellow pigments at the Chinaplas. The unique bright yellow products Colortherm Yellow 10 and 20 have been developed specifically for high-temperature demanding applications and show an unmatched color stability during the plastics extrusion processes thanks to innovative LANXESS’ technology.

The FCC business unit will feature a comprehensive range of innovative organic dyes, plasticizer and flame retardants for wide applications including toys, food packaging and construction.  LANXESS plasticizer Mesamoll, with faster gelling characteristics than standard plasticizers and its ability to be processed at lower temperatures, provides an ideal solution for toy manufacturers and other key customers in the plastics processing industry. These advantages will help reduce production and processing times while optimizing manufacturing costs.  Mesamoll is suitable for a diverse range of products, including gloves, water beds, sealants, casting compounds, swimming floats and rubber boots.  For plastics coloration, Macrolex dyes provide a safe and reliable option for consumer products which meet strict FDA requirements. The comprehensive Macrolex line of products for plastic coloration, ranging from transparent to opaque, deliver outstanding flow behavior, meterability and dispersibility. The products are ideally suited for the coloration of amorphous polymers such as PS, PC, ABS, PMMA and PET. With the increasing industry demand for PET bottles, the LANXESS Macrolex line of products provides industry customers with safe quality colorants designed for applications with stringent purity requirements.   In addition to plasticizers and colorants, the Functional Chemicals business unit will also showcase its comprehensive range of phosphorous flame retardants on the stand. Marketed under the brand names Levagard, Disflamoll, and Bayfomox, these flame retardants offer significant advantages even in demanding applications, such as low-fogging flexible foams for the automotive industry.

“All these products and solutions presented by LANXESS at Chinaplas reflect the creative culture of innovation we have evolved in our company,” said Martin Kraemer, CEO of LANXESS Greater China. This culture has enabled LANXESS to significantly boost the effectiveness and success of its business growth in China.
