Shanghai – November 25, 2021 – German specialty chemicals company LANXESS today signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) on R&D cooperation with Jiangnan University in Wuxi. The cooperation will focus on joint research around high-performance engineering plastics. It is part of the company’s effort to further strengthen research and development in China to meet local market needs.

“China is leading in the transition to e-mobility. With a broad footprint here, we are at the forefront and keep building on our wide range of products that meet the most challenging standards and norms of the E&E industry in terms of flame retardance, electrical properties and ecological behavior. We are committed to offer our customers in China the solutions they require to be successful and do so by also optimizing our products in the market, for the market,” Dr. Axel Tuchlenski, Head of Global Product & Application Development at the LANXESS High Performance Materials (HPM) business unit, said at the signing ceremony.

“This cooperation allows us to benefit from the science and technology platform and exchange with Jiangnan University, a leading university directly under the Ministry of Education and member of Project 211 with a reputation in China and beyond. After successful collaborations in the area of elastomers, we are building on a trustful relationship to drive new joint activities in the field of engineering plastics,” Michael Rockel, Head of HPM in China and General Manager of the LANXESS Wuxi site, said.

In addition to the R&D cooperation, LANXESS also launched a scholarship fund for Jiangnan University college students majoring in polymer materials. “Supporting young talents in science education is a key pillar of our corporate responsibility strategy and we are proud to support the communities we are active in. Supporting talents that can join our teams in the future is critical for us in competitive labor markets,” Waihong Loh, Site Manager of HPM in Wuxi, said.

Wuxi is one of the first sites of LANXESS in China and an important part of HPM’s global production network. In January 2006, the company launched operations of an HPM compounding facility for its Durethan® polyamide (PA) 6 and PA 66 compounds and Pocan® polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) compounds. In May 2007, it opened a Research and Development Testing Center (RDTC) at the site.

Meeting local market needs

LANXESS is strengthening its R&D capabilities in China. This comes as the country is expected to account for 50 percent of global chemical production by 2030. By shifting toward added-value products, local demand increasingly drives the need for local innovations. The cooperation with Jiangnan University is part of the company’s response to this trend. Prior to this, LANXESS opened its new APAC Application Development Center (AADC) in Shanghai in June 2021.

LANXESS is a leading specialty chemicals company with sales of EUR 6.1 billion in 2020. The company currently has about 14,900 employees in 33 countries. The core business of LANXESS is the development, manufacturing and marketing of chemical intermediates, additives, specialty chemicals and plastics. LANXESS is listed in the leading sustainability indices Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI World and Europe) and FTSE4Good.

On January 31, 2005, the company was initially listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and LANXESS Chemical (China) Co., Ltd. officially started operations. LANXESS now has 13 subsidiaries, 6 R&D centers and 7 production sites with around 1,200 employees in Greater China. LANXESS works closely with its local partners to develop market-oriented solutions that meet local market needs.
