Together for Sustainability and Carbon Neutrality

LANXESS Holds Open-to-Public Day for the Tenth Consecutive Year

Dr. Cheng Xu, Head of LANXESS Inorganic Pigments Business Unit, APAC, General Manager of LANXESS Ningbo site, made a speech in the opening ceremony.

Shanghai – November 14, 2021 – Specialty chemicals company LANXESS today held an Open-to-Public Day at its Ningbo site under the theme of “Together for Sustainability and Carbon Neutrality.” This is the tenth consecutive year that the company has conducted this activity.

The event attracted about 150 visitors including family members of local employees, suppliers and media representatives. By visiting the plant, the guests were able to gain insights into the operations of a state-of-the-art production site. During the chemistry class, LANXESS volunteers led chemical experiments under the theme of “carbon neutrality,” promoting understanding of the topic, providing examples on how the public can make relevant contributions in daily life, and explaining how LANXESS assists in its realization during R&D and production.

“We are very glad to open the door and welcome our stakeholders to learn more about us. Through Open-to-Public Days, we can show our innovative and environmentally friendly products and production processes to surrounding communities and bring LANXESS closer to the public. And today, we also hope to have made a contribution to promoting public awareness of carbon neutrality,” Dr. Cheng Xu, Head of LANXESS Inorganic Pigments Business Unit, APAC, General Manager of LANXESS Ningbo site, said in his opening speech.

According to the State Council’s government work report made on March 5, 2021, China will take solid steps toward the goals of achieving peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality. For this, the country will draw up an action plan for carbon emissions to peak by 2030, and improve the industrial structure and energy mix. LANXESS adheres to the principle of “good for business – good for society” and actively takes on environmental and social responsibilities.

Already in 2019, the company said it will achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. It was one of the first chemical companies to announce such a goal. To this end, it will continue to launch several special projects over the next few years, requiring its business units to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, accelerating the improvement of existing production processes, and strengthening process and technological innovation.

At Ningbo plant, LANXESS has developed the Ningbo Process which yields the “greenest” iron oxide red in China. In 2018, the unfiltered laughing gas generated during the production of red iron oxide pigment by the Penniman process in China equaled to 7.6 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. If all plants adopt the Ningbo Process®, the greenhouse gas reduction will be equivalent to the annual carbon dioxide emissions of 300,000 Chinese households. With this innovative process, Ningbo plant became the first and only iron oxide pigment manufacturer winning the certification of “National Green Plant” in 2018.

Open-to-Public Days are an important means of LANXESS to practice corporate social responsibility. Since 2012, the company has held 16 Open-to-Public Days at its sites in Shanghai, Changzhou, Wuxi, Qingdao, Liyang, Ningbo and Nantong. The events have attracted nearly 3,200 residents, teachers and students, professionals, volunteers and media representatives.

Through its contributions to sustainable business practices, LANXESS is ranked first in the chemicals category of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for Europe, and second for World. The company has also been listed in FTSE4Good for many years. In 2021, MSCI ESG Research upgraded the rating for LANXESS to AA, and EcoVadis upgraded the rating for LANXESS from Gold to Platinum.

The core business of LANXESS is the development, manufacturing and marketing of chemical intermediates, additives, specialty chemicals and plastics. LANXESS is listed in the leading sustainability indices Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI World and Europe) and FTSE4Good.
