Shanghai, January 18, 2022Specialty chemicals company LANXESS recently participated in the renovation of the central axis walkway in the central garden of Shanghai International Chemical New Materials Innovation Center (INNOGREEN) at Shanghai Chemical Industry Park (SCIP). Supported by the LANXESS Asia Pacific Application Development Center (AADC) and Röhm Asia Technology Center (ATC), LANXESS Bayferrox® and Colortherm® inorganic pigments, and Degaroute® reactive resins from Röhm, were used to successfully solve the fading problem of the original walkway.

“This is a small but significant project. Less than half a year after our AADC was put into operation at INNOGREEN, a cooperation with our neighbor ROHM Asia Technology Center has realized collaborative innovation, Ming Cheng Chien, President of LANXESS Asia-Pacific Region, said.

“Local innovation already accounts for a large share of new business. At AADC, we aim to strengthen local R&D capabilities further. Renovating the park walkway is an example for successful collaboration between partners – the approach that we use to bring innovative products and solutions to our customers,” Dr. Anika van Aaken, Head of AADC, said.

The AADC was the first project to put into operation at the INNOGREEN. LANXESS was awarded the Innovation and Governance Excellence Award 2021 by Shanghai Daily in recognition of the project contributing Shanghai to become a Science and Technology Innovation Center with global influence.

Providing high quality colors for the coatings industry

The red and yellow iron oxide pigments and green chromium oxide pigments of Inorganic Pigments (IPG) business unit were used for the renovation of the colored walkway. In addition to high color stability, LANXESS’ inorganic pigments also feature light resistance, weatherability and resistance to chemical corrosion, which enable the walkway to retain its original color in spite of exposure to the sun and the rain.

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to contribute to the sustainable development of SCIP with our products. The red and yellow iron oxide pigments used are from LANXESS Ningbo plant, where we developed the Ningbo Process for the production of iron oxide red. The process is based on patented technology to ensure the synthesis of yellowish red iron oxide in an environmentally friendly way. During the renovation of the walkway, we took full advantage of our products and technology to identify the most suitable product models and shades according to the requirements, providing environmentally friendly and high quality color solutions for the walkway,” Dr. Cheng Xu, Head of the IPG business unit for Asia-Pacific and General Manager of Ningbo plant, said.

As one of the world’s largest manufacturers of inorganic iron oxide and chromium oxide pigments, LANXESS has production sites on five continents, adopting high-tech, state-of-the-art, and environmentally-friendly processes to meet the highest technical and ecological standards. LANXESS Ningbo plant became the first and only iron oxide pigment manufacturer certified as “National Green Plant” in 2018.
