Shanghai – June 21, 2021 – Specialty chemicals company LANXESS today officially kicked off the seventh “Clean Water for Better Life” University Students Research Competition (Water Competition). Ming Cheng Chien, President of LANXESS Asia Pacific, Zhihong Yu, President and Editor-in-chief of China Sustainability Tribune, Jian Zhu, Deputy General Manager of Shanghai Chemical Industry Park Development Company, and Dr. Anika van Aaken, head of LANXESS APAC Application Development Center (AADC), among others, joined the student representatives of 22 participating teams in launching this year’s initiative.

“I am delighted to see that new students join the Water Competition every year to contribute to water protection. We believe that they can help solve water issues as long as they persevere and practice what they have learned,” Ming Cheng Chien, President of LANXESS Asia Pacific, said in his speech.

This year is the first year of the 14th Five-Year Plan period. The plan proposes to intensify the construction of water conservancy infrastructure, improve the level of intensive and safe use of water resources and strengthen their optimized allocation. Based on this, the Water Competition this year has set up two themes: Urban and industrial water recycling, and water safety.

Since the start of solicitation for projects, the Water Competition has received 43 projects submitted by representatives of 28 universities including Fudan University, Tongji University, Xiamen University, Nanjing University, Northeast Agricultural University, covering 18 provinces, cities and autonomous regions. Twenty-two participating teams were shortlisted after careful consideration.

“The Water Competition is a model of linkage between companies and universities and young people’s contribution to solving water issues. We expect that the young students give full play to their talent, wisdom and creativity, take responsibility, and leverage their professional knowledge to provide solutions to water issues. I wish them good results,” Zhihong Yu, President and Editor-in-chief of China Sustainability Tribune, said.

During the event, Ulf Dressler, head of LANXESS Corporate Communications in APAC, introduced the Water Competition to the students. Yuxi Wang from the Liquid Purification Technologies (LPT) business unit shared solutions for the purification of water and its practical applications, striving to provide inspiration to the research projects of the students. Over the next few months, the students will go into issues closely related to environmental and water protection from multiple perspectives and across disciplines and regions, and come up with innovative solutions. By doing so, they will build a clearer future and contribute to the new era with their power and wisdom of youth.

On June 21, representatives of the participating teams also visited the laboratory of AADC. “Welcome to our brand-new integrated application development center, which we have just officially opened three days ago. The AADC aims to further strengthen LANXESS’ innovation capabilities in China and the Asia-Pacific region, and meet the growing demand for localized product grades,” Anika van Aaken, head of the AADC, said to the students.

The evaluation meeting is expected to be held in September. At that time, the expert evaluation committee will carry out a comprehensive evaluation of the projects regarding practicality, innovation, social value, completion, quality of implementation and WeChat voting. LANXESS will also arrange volunteer tutors from LPT for each team, providing guidance and support for the students’ practical activities.

LANXESS has been actively paying attention to water shortage, and committed to providing clean drinking water and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment methods. With the release of the Water Ten Plan as an opportunity, LANXESS joined hands with China WTO Tribune to hold the first “Clean Water for Better Life” Competition in 2015, aiming to give full play to the professionalism and creativity of university students to explore innovative models that can effectively solve water issues. As of 2021, a total of six editions have been held, attracting nearly 1,000 students from 62 universities in 24 provinces, cities and autonomous regions.
