Continue to explore and contribute to innovative water treatment solutions

As the saying goes, “Readiness to converge with others makes a mountain high and a river mighty.” Promoting the governance of the water resources environment requires sustained and tenacious efforts from all parties. In 2015, LANXESS joined hands with China Sustainability Tribune (formerly known as China WTO Tribune) to launch the Water Competition based on its own water purification treatment business on the occasion when the Action Plan for Prevention and Treatment of Water Pollution (Water Ten Plan for short) was issued by the State Council.

From the 27 projects of 5 universities in 2015 to 47 projects of 35 universities this year, and from the Yangtze River basin to 23 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) across the country, the Water Competition in the past six years gave birth to 109 tailor-made innovative water treatment solutions, such as "Research on the Scheme of Water Resources Protection and Heavy Metal Pollution Control for East Lake of Wuhan" and "Security Crisis and Improvement of Treatment Methods of Water Resources in Caohai Lake".

The "CPC Central Committee’s Proposals for Formulating the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) for National Economic and Social Development and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035" recently issued by the state put forward the concept of strengthening the ecological protection and management of large rivers and important lakes and wetlands. “The initiative has opened up a new world to these future engineers and scientists who are inspired to further contribute to solving the water challenges in China and across the world. " said Ming Cheng Chien, President of LANXESS Asia-Pacific, in his speech.

In November of this year, LANXESS set itself new goals for sustainable water resources management. As part of its "Water Stewardship Program", LANXESS will initially strengthen sustainable water management with specific local projects at four sites in the areas with the greatest water stress. The aim is to reduce absolute water withdrawal at these sites by 15 percent by 2023. The experience gained from these projects should help to further improve water performance globally.

Work together to protect water resources

Due to their involvement in the Water Competition, more and more young students are joining hands with LANXESS on water environmental protection, devoting themselves to the water resources protection and governance industry. By 2020, a total of 729 students from 48 universities, including Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tongji University, Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Shandong University, and Hohai University, have participated in the competition.

"The young generation is the hope of the country and bears heavy responsibilities of the era. The Water Competition has got more aspiring young people involved in water resources protection and allowed them to use their professional knowledge to provide innovative solutions to the environmental problems," said Deng Mingwen, Executive Editor-in-Chief of China Sustainability Tribune, at the award ceremony.

At the award ceremony, Mr. Ming Cheng Chien, President of LANXESS Asia-Pacific Region; Mr. Richard Cuntz, Consul of Science and Education of Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai; Mr. Zhang Chun, General Manager of Shanghai Chemical Industry Park Development Company;  Ms. Deng Mingwen, Executive Editor-in-Chief of China Sustainability Tribune, jointly launched the 7th "Clean Water for Better Life" University Students Research Competition. In the future, LANXESS will help build a sustainable clean water development ecosystem by continuously aggregating values and extending results.
