LANXESS’ Science Day showcases the charm of chemistry sciences

Shanghai/Qingdao – LANXESS hosted today its first Science Day in China at its Qingdao site. By opening the door to the public and displaying some hands-on experiments, the specialty chemicals company showcases how advanced chemical sciences help improve the quality of people’s lives.

About 80 participants, including community representatives, students from Qingdao University of Science and Technology (QUST), employees and their families, attended the whole-day event and explored the fascinating world of chemistry.

“Reaching out and giving back to the community is always LANXESS’ commitment,” said Martin Kraemer, CEO of LANXESS Greater China. “We want to use the Science Day to illustrate the important roles of chemistry in shaping our lives and future, and to inspire greater interests in science and technology studies among young generation.”

The Science Day event forms a part of the company’s celebration of the International Year of Chemistry (IYC) 2011, which aims at increasing the public awareness of chemistry in meeting global needs and to generate enthusiasm for the creative future of chemistry.

As a part of the Science Day event, winners of the LANXESS chemistry experiment design competition were announced. The competition, co-hosted by QUST, has received more than 100 pieces of experiment design works since it has been kicked off in July. Winning students were given the stage to display and present their excellent experiments on the day.

Apart from that, participants were also offered guided tours to LANXESS sites - Rhein Chemie Qingdao manufacturing site and labs, as well as LANXESS Rubber Research Center, experiencing themselves the modern production lines and one of the world’s most advanced rubber centers.

For children some simple and interesting experiments were demonstrated to help them obtain a first hand  experience of  the amazing science. “We prepare these small experiments not only to make science fun, but we hope to spark a lifelong interest that will inspire the children to follow a career in science,” said Kraemer.
